a new natural cereal for innovative food applications

Healthy and Functional

Vivagran® has elevated levels of several components known to have health-promoting properties.

Vivagran® has exceptionally high levels of the carotenoid antioxidant lutein. Tritordeum lines have up to 20 times the lutein content of bread wheat and 11 times the content of durum wheat. Lutein is recognized as having a major role in eye health by protecting against macular degeneration, the major cause of loss of sight during ageing. In addition, there is increasing evidence that lutein helps protects the skin against UV damage and thus skin cancer.

In addition to lutein, tritordeum lines have high levels of polyphenolic antioxidants such as ferulic acid. These antioxidants, which are components of cereal cell walls, are released in the lower gut during digestion and a number of studies have indicated that they may have a protective role against colon cancer.

Vivagran® has elevated levels of dietary fibre, typically around 15% dm, compared with 13% in bread wheat. Tritordeum fibre is predominantly arabinoxylan, as in wheat, rather than beta-glucan as seen in barley. Tritordeum also contains elevated levels of fructans in comparison with wheat (1.9% vs 0.8% dm). Recent research indicates that soluble arabinoxlan fibre has significant gut and cardiovascular health properties, while fructans are known pre-biotic fibres which promote the growth of beneficial gut microorganisms such as Bifidus and Lactobacillus bacteria

Vivagran® typically has a higher protein content  than bread wheat, varying typically in the range of 12 to 14% and it has good gluten levels.  The composition of the protein is similar to that of wheat, with a good essential amino acid index.
